Football to Futsal
By Stephen Boyd
Growing up as kid you’re always introduced to many sports, but football is always the main one to stand out to you. I was always football obsessed and always wanted to play. My coach at the time, started moving our training sessions indoors and started introducing us to small, sided games, whilst working on our sole control and finishing abilities. Then one day we played in a regional qualifier and just about made it out the group after being handed a 4-1 loss. We played that same team again in the finals and it was at that moment I fell in love with futsal. I still remember to this day how our close control, matched with perfecting timed passes and flawless rotations carved apart the opposition as we looked set to win the final. However, in the final moments of the game they were on top of us and a desperate last-minute shot from their pivot came hurtling towards my goal, I dived as quick as I could and managed a fingertip save onto the cross bar to ensure a victory. Seeing my teammates run over to congratulate me alongside the local news reporters ready for an interview, I knew how great this sport could be.
Since that moment I have gone on to captain my side Whiteknights, to countless regional qualification wins and finish 8th in the national championships. I have also represented Swansea University in the BUCS Western Tier and direct an intramural futsal league within Swansea University.
A high intensity, fast paced environment is a must for every football fan as it allows you develop the small details in your game such as rotations, ball control and composure, that would otherwise go under developed in traditional football practice as futsal requires you to be a quick thinker and fast on your feet.
